Video: How Wine is Made

Winter Park Winery a small winery in the Colorado Rockies shows us the process of making wine from vine to glass. This wine is really a labor of love by the wine maker, claiming "It's more art than science." He has friends that help him and they work for the finished wine. I have to claim a little ignorance in all this. I thought you just crushed grapes and waited. Look what I learned.

The Million Dollar Winery Book

In early 2010 a book will be released that will list the word's top 100 Wineries. The price tag? $1,000,000. Well, it's not just a book. Every buyer also gets 600 bottles of wine from these top 100 wineries. That's right, 100 six-bottle cases, from the world's best wineries*.

The book, published by Kraken Opus, will eventually be consulted on by something like 40 sommeliers. Only 100 of these books will be produced. 25 of them are already spoken for.

So, if you've got a spare Mill lying around you can have instant bitchin wine cellar.

We here at the WinoNation are willing to write an extensive review of this book should the anyone at Kraken be reading this. No, no, it's no trouble. We are givers.

Find out a bit more here.

* Could this be any more arbitrary? I submit that it can not.

The Wine Diaper

The Wine Diaper

The Wine Diaper, in addition to having what I consider a misleading name, is one of those solutions to something I never realized was a problem. But after consideration it makes a helluva lotta sense. The Wine Diaper is a specially designed bag used to carry bottles of wine. If a bottle of wine should break in your luggage the Wine Diaper will fully contain all the liquid and glass without spilling.

Now I've never particularly had the urge to transport bottles of wine over great distances but then I also don't like spending more than 12 bucks on a bottle. This doesn't prevent me from imagining the horror of a bottle of red breaking inside my carry-on. I have many fine t-shirts.

This video shows the Diaper in action.

However, I think it also shows how difficult it can be to break a wine bottle? Self defeating?

I Pledge Allegiance to the Winos

Conceived in the fall of ‘08, WinoNation has been percolating (fermenting if you will) for right around 9 months. So, who are we? What are we up to? And how are we going to help you, the road-tripping wine enthusiast, explore the thousands of wineries in the United States?

The executive branch of the WinoNation consists of myself (Mike) and my co-founder, Christian. Well-voiced cabinet positions are held by our girlfriends. We are average gentlemen with no accreditations or notable achievements in the wine industry. We enjoy drinking the stuff.

Our goal is simple: find great wineries and tell you about them.

Let’s get started.

Mike and Christian

Who are the Winos?

The WinoNation is populated by Christian and Mike. Two grown-ups from the Gotham metropolitan area that enjoy wineries and are consistently appalled at how difficult it can be to find new wineries on the web. So why not let them share their stories and news with you?

Be reasonable.
